Canton officer taken to hospital after sustaining injuries during on-duty crash

A 26-year-old Canton officer was transported to Aultman Hospital Friday afternoon following a single-vehicle crash on 18th St around 3:30 p.m.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Officer J.T. Hampton, 25, of Massillon, was driving southbound on Myrtle Avenue in a 2017 Ford Explorer police cruiser, attempting to get in position to conduct a traffic stop. While making a right turn west onto 18th Street, the police cruiser slid off the south side of the roadway and struck a tree.

Officer Hampton did not sustain any injuries in the crash, but Officer M. Thomas, who was riding passenger in the cruiser, sustained possible injuries.

Officer Thomas, 26, of Canton, was transported to Aultman Hospital by the Canton Police Department following the crash for medical evaluation.

The police cruiser did not have lights or sirens activated at the time of the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
