Classes at Canton McKinley were canceled Friday after fleas were found in classrooms.

According to a statement provided by Canton City Schools, the school’s custodial staff located a presence of fleas in a “few” classrooms within McKinley High School.

“Following the reported sightings, an inspection was promptly conducted, revealing that the fleas seemed to be confined to a few classrooms,” Superintendent Jeff Talbert said in a statement.

Professional extermination teams were contacted to address the situation. They say the issue couldn’t be resolved in one evening, so it was necessary to cancel class on Friday.

“This decision allows the extermination company unrestricted access to the premises on
Friday and throughout the weekend to ensure a comprehensive and effective treatment,” Talbert said.

The district said they are working to prioritize the health and safety of the school community.
