Two dogs were killed in a house fire in the city of Canton Wednesday evening, according to Division Fire Chief Steve Henderson. Preliminary information originally suggested that six dogs had die. That number has been changed to two.

The fire occurred around 7 p.m. at a home along Smith Ave SW near Second St. SW just off Tuscarawas W.

When crews arrived to the scene, the house was engulfed in flames, Chief Henderson noted. All occupants of the home were not home when the fire happened, but two dogs died as a result of the fire. Three other dogs escaped and three puppies escaped.

The fire on Smith Ave SW occurred around the same time as unknown explosion noises throughout Stark County, but the fire is unrelated to the loud booms, Henderson said. Officials are working to determine the cause and location of the loud noises.

No firefighters were injured as a result of the house fire on Smith Ave SW.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
