In Tuscarawas County, a fatal altercation unfolded early Friday morning as local law enforcement officials engaged in a deadly shootout with a suspect, according to Sheriff Orvis Campbell.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s New Philadelphia Post initially responded to the Schneider’s Crossing exit ramp on I-77 S at 2:19 a.m., later requesting assistance from a Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s deputy who possessed crisis intervention training due to the mental health nature of the situation.

Over a span of more than three hours, the Tuscarawas County deputy made extensive efforts, including providing food to the suspect and arranging for an ambulance to transport him to a medical facility.

At 5:27 a.m., the situation escalated when the individual brandished a firearm, resulting in gunfire from responding troopers and the deputy, leading to the suspect’s death on the scene.

The deceased’s identity remains undisclosed at this juncture, with authorities withholding this information.

Campbell says the suspect is from Ohio but not the immediate vicinity.

No law enforcement officials were injured.
