In the early hours of Sunday, June 23, an East Canton police officer came under fire during a routine traffic stop, authorities reported.

According to officials, the incident occurred at 12:05 am when the officer was conducting a traffic stop. A man riding a motorcycle allegedly fired four or five rounds while passing by the scene. It remains unclear whether the shots were aimed at the officer or fired into the air.

The suspect then reportedly fled northbound on Route 44 towards Louisville, firing two additional rounds at the officer during a pursuit. Ultimately, the individual turned back towards East Canton, and fled southbound into the village.

The situation escalated further when the suspect crashed at the intersection of Church and Wood Streets. Following a brief foot pursuit, law enforcement officers were able to apprehend the individual.

The suspect, identified as Edward Irwin III of Canton, is now facing charges of Attempting Felonious Assault against a police officer. Authorities also discovered suspected methamphetamine in his possession, in addition to multiple outstanding warrants, including a parole violation warrant.

The officer who was shot at did not fire any shots during the incident.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment for minor injuries. The East Canton Police Department was assisted by the Louisville Police Department, the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, and the Hartville K-9 unit during the apprehension.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
