The Canton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on July 7, involving a motorcycle and a passenger car. The collision took place at approximately 3:15 p.m. on State Route 21 near Milepost 2 in Bethlehem Township, Stark County.

The incident involved a 2011 Honda CR-V driven by Wanda F. Solon, 81, of Navarre, traveling northbound on State Route 21, and a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Rodney W. Kandel, 47, of Millersburg, traveling southbound on the same route. A 48-year-old female passenger was seated behind Kandel on the motorcycle.

According to initial reports, the Honda CR-V veered left of center, striking the Harley Davidson head-on. Following the collision, the Honda continued off the left side of the roadway, while the motorcycle came to rest in the northbound lane.

Erie Valley EMS transported both Kandel and his passenger to Aultman Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Kandel was later airlifted to a hospital in Akron where he died Monday. His female passenger was airlifted to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital.

Solan sustained no injured in the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors. Neither Kandel nor his passenger were wearing protective equipment at the time of the crash, according to troopers.
