A structure fire at a residence on 929 3rd St. NW in Canton prompted a response from the Canton Fire Department on Friday evening.

The emergency call was received at 7:45 p.m.. on July 12, reporting flames emanating from a two-story home. Upon arrival, fire crews were met with heavy fire billowing out of second-story windows. Concerns arose regarding the possible presence of an 11-year-old girl inside the building, as reported by bystanders.

Initial attempts to locate the child through the interior stairwell were halted by intense heat, forcing firefighters to adjust their approach. Crews utilized a ladder to access a second-story window, where they successfully found the child in a bathroom. The young girl was rescued from the house and rushed to Aultman Hospital for medical attention.

The 11-year-old was airlifted from Aultman Hospital to Akron Children’s Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Two dogs, a pig, and a bird were safely recovered from the first floor of the residence.
