A man from Alliance is dead while a woman is in critical condition after being hit by a train in Sebring early Monday morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports the two were walking on the tracks just before 2 a.m. Monday morning when they were struck by a passing train.

The deceased man has been identified as 21-year-old Michael Lawson of Alliance. Authorities are working to identify the woman who was transported to an Akron Hospital with a serious head injury where she remains in critical condition.

Authorities said it appears the two were walking along side the tracks, but attempted to cross the tracks as the train approached. That’s when they were struck.

The incident happened on a Norfolk Southern line in the area of Pennsylvania Avenue between 16th and 17th streets.

136 passengers were aboard the Amtrak train that hit the duo.

The crash remains under investigation.
