Extreme heat forces school closures in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties: 8-28-24

Several schools in Stark and Tuscarawas counties will close or release students early on Wednesday, August 28, as extreme heat is expected to push temperatures above 90 degrees.

Stark County

  • St. Mary-Massillon will be closed
  • Heritage Christian School in Canton

Tuscarawas County

  • Dover City Schools announced that due to unsafe temperatures inside their buildings, all elementary and middle school classes for grades PK-8 will be canceled. However, Dover High School, which is air-conditioned, will maintain its regular schedule for students in grades 9-12. Buses will operate as scheduled for all students attending classes, including those at Buckeye Career Center. Additionally, sixth-grade camp will proceed as planned.
  • New Philadelphia City Schools will also close on Wednesday. This closure includes preschool programs.
