The family of Jayland Walker has reached a $4.85 million settlement with the City of Akron, according to a joint statement released on Monday by the Walker family and city officials. The settlement resolves litigation stemming from Walker’s death at the hands of Akron police in June 2022.
Walker, 25, was shot and killed by Akron police officers following a traffic stop that escalated into a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, police reported that Walker fired a shot from his vehicle before fleeing on foot. Officers fatally shot Walker, hitting him more than 40 times. A gun was later found in Walker’s car, though he was unarmed when shot. His death sparked nationwide protests and calls for police reform.
As part of the settlement, the City of Akron will pay the Walker family $4.85 million in four installments over the next four years.
“The Malik administration has prioritized ongoing dialogue and engagement between city leaders and the community, including the Walker family, to examine policies and procedures and make improvements where needed for the safety of all residents,” the joint statement read.
In response to the incident, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and the Akron Police Department have already revised the city’s vehicle pursuit policy as part of an ongoing review of safety practices.
“We all agree: Akron should be a place where everyone is safe,” the statement continued. “We all know there are important problems to address in our community, and it is through our continued commitment, courage, and conversations we will move our city forward, together.”
