A driver sustained serious injuries in a multi-vehicle crash that closed State Route 183 for several hours Wednesday afternoon, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred when a commercial vehicle was traveling northbound on SR 183, and two other vehicles, a Ford Escape and a Chevy Cobalt, were traveling southbound, authorities said.

The driver of the Ford Escape had stopped and was waiting to make a left turn onto Millercrest Street when it was rear-ended by the Chevy Cobalt. The impact caused the Chevy to cross the center line, where it was struck by the northbound commercial vehicle.

The driver of the Chevy Cobalt, who was determined to be at fault, was transported to Aultman Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The drivers of the commercial vehicle and the Ford Escape also suffered injuries but were not transported by EMS, officials said.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, but officials do not believe speed was a factor. They are looking into the possibility of distracted driving as a contributing cause.

State Route 183 was closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the crash.
