Minerva native and current Village Council Member Matt Kishman has been elected as the next state representative for Ohio’s 50th District, according to unofficial results.

Kishman, a Republican, defeated Democratic candidate Doremus Redvine with a commanding lead, securing 35,576 votes, or 66.69%, to Redvine’s 17,768 votes, or 33.31%. Kishman, 40, will assume his new role in January, representing the district that encompasses parts of Stark County.

Currently serving on Minerva’s Village Council, Kishman plans to resign from that position to focus on his responsibilities as state representative. He will fill the seat previously held by Republican Reggie Stoltzfus, who left the role earlier this year to pursue a congressional bid for Ohio’s 6th District, a race he ultimately lost in the Republican primary.

Kishman’s election brings a local perspective to Columbus, where he has vowed to advocate for issues important to his constituents in the 50th District.
