A 35-year-old man is in critical condition following a shooting early Sunday morning on Canton’s northeast side, police said.

Chief John Gabbard reported that officers responded to several calls about a shooting at 2:10 a.m. in the 2300 block of Winfield Way NE. Upon arrival, officers found the victim lying on the side of the roadway with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers administered CPR and first aid until Canton Fire Department medics arrived and transported the man to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital. He was later transferred to Akron General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Police arrested the victim’s wife, 33-year-old Ashley G. Martin of Massillon, at the scene. Martin faces multiple charges, including second-degree felonious assault, first-degree domestic violence, first-degree using weapons while intoxicated, and fourth-degree discharging firearms in city limits.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Canton Police Detective Bureau at (330) 489-3144. Anonymous tips can also be sent to Tip411 or Stark County Crime Stoppers. Residents can sign up for Tip411 at www.cantonohio.gov/police.
