A driver was hospitalized early New Year’s Day after fleeing a traffic stop and crashing through multiple fences, a tree, and eventually coming to rest in a backyard.

The incident began around 1:49 a.m. when a Perry Township police officer observed a vehicle speeding without headlights or taillights near Genoa Avenue and Southway Street SW. The driver continued over the railroad tracks on Genoa Avenue SW at a high speed, emitting sparks.

A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver initially pulled over but fled moments later, prompting a brief police pursuit. Due to safety concerns, officers immediately terminated the pursuit.

Shortly after, officers discovered debris in the roadway at Genoa Avenue NW and Banyan Street NW. The vehicle was later located in the backyard of a residence at 1027 Prescot Avenue NW.

Investigators determined that the driver had left the roadway, crashed through four fences, struck a tree, and ultimately crashed in the yard. The driver was found trapped in the vehicle’s passenger seat.

The Perry Township Fire Department was dispatched to assist with extrication. After being freed from the wreckage, the driver was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center for treatment.

The incident remains under investigation, and charges are pending.

“The Perry Township Police Department would like to thank the Perry Township Fire Department for their swift response and assistance,” said Chief of Police Bryan D. Taylor. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community and holding those who jeopardize public safety accountable.”

Further updates will be provided as additional details become available.
