The Canton Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire early Monday morning at 520 Gobel Ave. SE, where a blaze caused extensive damage to an occupied home.

Firefighters were dispatched at 2:09 a.m. and arrived on the scene at 2:14 a.m. to find heavy flames engulfing the front porch and extending into the interior of the one-and-a-half-story home.

The residents — two adult males, one adult female, and their two dogs — safely exited the home before fire crews arrived. However, one cat remains unaccounted for. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.

Efforts to combat the fire were initially hampered by downed power lines near the home. Despite the firefighters’ efforts, the blaze caused severe damage to the structure, rendering it uninhabitable. The estimated losses include $45,400 to the structure and $11,917 to the contents.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
