Canton police are investigating a hit-and-run incident involving a Ford pickup truck and a sedan that escalated into a shooting on Sunday, Jan. 12.

Officers were dispatched to the area of 14th Street and Spring Avenue NE after a caller reported that a sedan sideswiped his truck and fled the scene. The sedan was later found abandoned near 14th Street and Spring Avenue NE.

Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers observed a damaged stop sign and street sign at 14th Street and Cherry Avenue NE. The signs, originally posted on the west side of Cherry Avenue, had been struck and knocked to the east side of the intersection, consistent with the caller’s report.

The incident took a dramatic turn when police were informed that a shooting victim had arrived at Mercy Medical Center in the Ford pickup truck involved in the hit-and-run. The truck’s driver, a 17-year-old male, had been alerted to the collision while at a residence near 14th Street and Downing Court NE, reportedly attempted to locate the suspect vehicle after discovering the damage to his truck.

The driver stated that he found the suspect vehicle abandoned in an alley. As he and another individual approached the vehicle, a man exited and allegedly began firing a gun at them before fleeing on foot.

Officers later located a Ford Taurus matching the description of the suspect vehicle near 15th Street NE and Spring Avenue NE. The sedan had visible damage, including green paint transfer from the struck street sign and side-swipe damage consistent with the victim’s account. The vehicle was impounded for further investigation.

No arrests have been reported as of Monday, and police are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Canton Police Department.
