A man wanted in Canton was arrested Wednesday at a home in Canal Winchester, where authorities also discovered a deceased woman in the basement, according to officials.

Darrell Carter Jr., 33, was taken into custody by the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team at a residence in the 5900 block of Levi Cramer Road. Carter was wanted by the Stark County Sheriff’s Office for failing to appear in court on an assault charge, the U.S. Marshals Service said.

The identity of the woman found at the scene remains unknown, and police are working to determine who she is and the circumstances surrounding her death.

“This fugitive from Stark County thought he could evade arrest by fleeing to the Columbus area, but great investigative work by our task force resulted in his arrest today,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said in a statement. “Unfortunately, a dead body was located, but our task force and the local police department will work together to uncover the identity of the female.”
