Authorities have identified the driver who died after his vehicle collided with a train early Friday morning in Columbiana.
According to a news release, the driver was 45-year-old Nickolas Thompson of Salem. The crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on Pittsburgh Street when Thompson attempted to drive around the lowered railroad crossing gates. His car was struck by an eastbound Amtrak train and came to rest on its roof along the south side of the tracks.
In response to the crash, Pittsburgh Street was closed between East Railroad Street and Duquesne Street as crews worked to address the damage. Repairs included replacing a crossing gate arm and flashing light signals that were destroyed during the collision.
The road closure remained in place late Friday morning, and it is unclear when the crossing will reopen.
