A fight erupted during a middle school basketball game at STEAM Academy in Canton, leading to a chaotic scene in which officers called for backup and one officer was hospitalized, according to a police report.
Canton Police working an extra security detail at the game attempted to restore order when the altercation broke out, but soon radioed for immediate assistance, reporting that they were being struck by hostile individuals, according to the report.
As additional units arrived, officers identified a suspect who they say was the primary instigator, escalating tensions among the crowd. The individual was ordered to leave the property but refused to comply, police said. Two people were arrested.
One officer was transported to a local hospital after sustaining a facial injury.
The incident remains under investigation.
