Authorities have identified a man found dead along a rural road in Carroll County and confirmed he died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Carroll County Coroner Dr. Mandal B. Haas identified the victim as 30-year-old Douglas Hubler. He was born in Pennsylvania and may have been residing in New York State. His family last heard from him several months ago.

Dr. Haas said determining how long Hubler had been dead could be difficult due to cold temperatures and the fact that his body was wrapped in a tarp.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said highway workers discovered the body along Cashmere Road near Scio at 9:54 a.m. on Feb. 7. Deputies responded to the scene along with Dr. Haas, Carroll County Prosecutor Steven Barnett, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) agents, and members of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office.

Dr. Haas confirmed Hubler suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head and said he does not believe the wound was self-inflicted.

The body, which had distinct tattoos on both arms, was transported to the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office for further examination.

Family members have not had contact with Hubler recently, with his mother last speaking to him several months ago.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details will be released as they become available.
