A man in his 30s was fatally shot by Akron police Thursday morning after he fired at officers during a traffic stop involving a stolen vehicle, authorities said.
According to Akron police, officers attempted to stop a white Toyota Camry near Kenmore Boulevard and Lakeshore Boulevard around 8:45 a.m. when the driver opened fire. Officers returned fire, striking the man at least once.
Officers provided emergency medical aid until EMS arrived, but the suspect succumbed to his injuries. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.
Per departmental policy, three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. Their service with the department ranges from nine to 30 years.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene and is leading the investigation. Upon completion, the case will be submitted to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for review before being presented to the Summit County Grand Jury.
Additionally, the Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will conduct an internal investigation, with findings to be provided to the police chief and the City of Akron Police Auditor.
The incident remains under investigation. No further details have been released.
