Two people are dead after a midair collision involving two small planes near an airport on the outskirts of Tucson, authorities said Wednesday, according to an AP News report.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it is investigating the crash, which prompted a response from the Marana Police Department. Officials confirmed two fatalities but did not immediately release additional details.
The crash comes amid a string of aviation disasters in North America over the past month. Last week, one of two pilots died when a private jet owned by Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil veered off a runway in Arizona and collided with a business jet.
Recent incidents also include a Delta Air Lines jet flipping onto its roof while landing in Toronto and a deadly commuter plane crash in Alaska. In late January, 67 people died when an Army helicopter collided with an American Airlines passenger jet in Washington, D.C., marking the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster since 2001. Just a day later, a medical transport jet carrying a child patient, her mother, and four others crashed into a Philadelphia neighborhood, killing all seven aboard and injuring 19 others.
The NTSB continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s collision.
