The Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that left a woman and a child dead and another child critically injured Monday evening on State Route 170.
The crash occurred around 7:56 p.m. north of New Middletown. According to investigators, a blue 2017 Chevrolet Colorado, driven by Walter A. Bolt, 59, of Struthers, was traveling southbound when it crossed the centerline and struck a gray 2004 Honda Accord traveling northbound. The impact caused the Honda Accord to overturn and come to rest in a ditch on the east side of the roadway, while the Chevrolet Colorado stopped partially off the west side.
Angela Brown, 44, of New Middletown, the driver of the Honda Accord, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Two juvenile passengers were also in the vehicle. Both were flown from the scene by medical helicopter, but one later died from injuries at the hospital. The second child remains in critical condition. Authorities have not determined whether the juveniles were restrained at the time of the crash.
Bolt, the driver of the Chevrolet Colorado, sustained serious injuries and was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Investigators believe alcohol played a role in the crash, though the incident remains under investigation.
Emergency responders from Springfield Township, New Middletown, and Poland assisted at the scene. The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office and Gobel’s Towing also responded.
