The Stark County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Monday night at a bar in Canton Township.
Deputies responded to the Old Landmark Tavern, located at 5224 Ridge Ave. SE, around 11:46 p.m. March 24 following a 911 call reporting a shooting. Authorities said a verbal altercation between several patrons escalated into a physical fight, which then led to gunfire.
Upon arrival, deputies found a 75-year-old man — identified as Phillip Harris, believed to be a Canton resident — inside the tavern with multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies began life-saving efforts until EMS arrived. Harris was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital by the Canton Township Fire Department, where he was later pronounced dead.
Samuel D. Shank, 26, of Canton was taken into custody at the scene and charged with one count of murder, a special felony, the sheriff’s office said.
No other injuries were reported. The Canton Township Fire Department assisted deputies at the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Stark County Sheriff’s Office at 330-430-3800 or the anonymous tip line at 330-451-3937.
