West Branch Local Schools issued a statement Monday addressing community backlash following the decision not to renew Walt DeShields’ contract as head coach of the high school girls basketball team.

In the wake of strong support for DeShields from former players, parents, and alumni, the district said it had reviewed community feedback and carefully considered the concerns raised before making its decision.

“Certain incidents raised by members of the community concerning Coach DeShields’ behavior have generated significant concerns regarding his judgment, which are not consistent with the district’s priorities,” the statement read in part.

Athletic Director Ryan Wolf released the statement on behalf of the district, which emphasized the importance of student safety, emotional well-being, and mental health.

While acknowledging DeShields’ impact on the program — noting his contributions to building a successful and respected team — the district said it must also uphold the integrity of its athletic programs and ensure all students are supported in a positive environment.

“The District recognizes that the decision may be difficult for some, and that it has sparked a range of emotions within the community,” the statement continued. “We are committed to fostering an atmosphere where respect and accountability are paramount.”

Officials said they are working toward a smooth leadership transition and reaffirmed their commitment to student-athletes as the program moves forward.
