The second and final day of the Division II West Holmes District track and field tournament commenced with a number of area athletes and teams qualifying for next week’s Regional meets.
Tuscarawas Valley scored the most points (124) among all competing girls’ teams, while West Holmes (92) led the boys’ pool.
GIRLS
The Trojan girls qualified five individuals to the Regionals, including reigning IVC Runner of the Year Hannah Wyler, who earned first-place finishes in the girls’ 800 (2:20.92), 1600 (5:07.68), and 3200-meter (11:49.10) races.
Ella Mcelwee (1:01.19) won the girls’ 400 dash, while Brook Stookey (37-06.50) finished first in the shot put. Mcelwee also posted a third-place mark in the 200 (27.95), while Stookey was the runner-up in the discus throw (117-00).
Mcelwee was part of two Tusky Valley relay teams that won Saturday events, including the girls’ 4×200 (1:49.49, with Emma Benner, Leah Borquin, and Cara Pipitone) and 4×400 (4:12.44, with Borquin, Wyler, and Pipitone). The Trojans’ quarter of Benner, Borquin, Pipitone, and Sally Ray won the 4×100 with a 52.65 finishing time.
Third-place Minerva took the final relay event in the 4×800, with Jenna Cassidy, Kayla Crissman, Hannah Ison, and Hera Hoffee posting a 10:04.24 finish. Hoffee (second place, 5:24.55) and Crissman (third place, 5:33.57) each qualified in the 1600, while Cassidy (second place, 800, 2:24.03) and Ison (second place, 3200, 12:07.11) advanced to Regional play in their respective events.
The Lions also qualified Cleo Mueller (fourth place, 200, 28.43; second place, long jump, 17-05.25), Abby Wheeler (first place, high jump, 5-01.00; third place, long jump, 16-11.50), and Caitlyn Hopple (fourth place, 3200, 12:25.12).
West Holmes finished second in team play at 114 points, with Jasmine Giaque (13.30) winning the 100 dash. Giaque also took second in the 200 (26.94), while Amy Hughes won the discus throw (119-11) and was runner-up in the shot put (35-07.50). Noelle Smith (fourth place, 800, 2:26.93), Lexi Starner (third place, 3200, 12:19.64), Cierra Miller (third place, 300 hurdles, 50.64; fourth place, 100 hurdles, 17.88), Laney Duff (second place, high jump, 5-00.00), and Zoe Norris (third place, long jump (34-04.50) also made Regionals for the Knights.
Other girls’ qualifiers for Saturday included:
- Beaver Local’s Kodi Kinsey (first place, 200, 26.74; 100 hurdles (16.26); 300 hurdles (47.96); long jump (17-05.25) and Sarah Havens (third place, 100 hurdles (17.39)
- Carrollton’s Josie Burgett (third place, 800, 2:24.75) and Elizabeth Funkhouser (second place, 300 hurdles, 49.25)
- Claymont’s Makkah Maple (fourth place, 100, 13.67; long jump, 16-06.75), Averi Wallace (second place, 400, 1:01.99), Liberty Dunlap (fourth place, shot put, 33-01.00), and Arianna Terakedis (fourth place, discus, 102-09)
- Harrison Central’s Nadia Tweedy (third place, 400, 1:02.90)
- Indian Valley’s Alisha Shaw (fourth place, 400, 1:02.93)
- River View’s Cortney Bookless (second place, 100, 13.35)
- Sandy Valley’s Alaina Heller (third place, 100, 13.54), Casey Russell (fourth place, 800 (2:03.82), and Lexi Tucci (third place, high jump, 5-00.00)
BOYS
Host West Holmes saw six of its athletes qualify for Regional play, including first-place finishes from Kyle Maltarich (6-02.00) in the high jump and Brock Zimmerly (159-10) in the discus throw. Zimmerly also finished second in the boys’ shot put (45-11.00).
Other top-four finishers for the Knights included Zeke Galbraith (fourth place, 1600, 4:39.44; second place, 3200, 10:23.49), Zander Shultz (second place, high jump, 6-01.00), Zach Snow (second place, pole vault, 11-06.00), and Macin Miller (third place, pole vault, 11-06.00).
Garaway’s boys team finished second in team play (79 points). Brendan Chapman took the 400 title with a 50.69 finish, while teammates Quinten Schwartz (800, 1:59.82) and Bobby Palmer (1600, 4:36.07) finished second and third in their respective events. TY Winters took fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.32) and third in the 300 hurdles (41.29).
Among the Pirates’ field qualifiers were Braden Adams (third place, shot put, 44-04.75) and Tate Amicone (fourth place, shot put, 44-00.00; third place, discus, 144-08).
Beaver Local (74 points) finished third with Caleb White winning the 100 (11.18) and 200 (22.16) sprints, while James Monte won the 110 hurdles (15.23). Ethan Agnew placed third in the 100 with an 11.61 finish. Beaver also won the 4×100 (43.05, with Agnew, Monte, White, and Dylan Ferguson) and 4×200 (1:29.86, with Agnew, Onte, White, and Tyler Prideau) boys relay races.
Fourth-place Claymont (68.50) was represented by multi-event qualifiers Grayden Mooneyham (second place, 110 hurdles, 15.33; 300 hurdles, 41.11; third place, high jump (6-00.00) and Alec Terakedis (second place, 100, 11.42; third place, 200, 23.65), as well as boys discus runner-up Kurtis Haney (102-09).
Indian Valley (68) finished fifth with a win by pole vaulter David Adams (15-03.00), along with qualifying rounds from Max Steed (third place, 400, 52.27), Kolton Thomas (third place, 110 hurdles, 16.32), and Remmington Myers (fourth place, pole vault, 11-00.00).
Sixth-place Minerva (60) gained a pair of first-place finishes from Connor Shingleton in the boys’ 800 (1:59.56) and 1600 (4:33.09), while Grasyn Rettig won the 3200 (10:20.13). Mason Steele (third place, 3200, 10:37.10) and Garrett Ault (fourth place, 300 hurdles (42.25) rounded out the Lions’ boys qualifiers. Rettig, Shingleton, and Steele joined Ryan Cassidy in winning the boys’ 4×800 relay (8:31.50).
In the boys’ 4×400 relay, Ridgewood’s quartet of Xavier Lamneck, Kigenn Millender, Dalton Patterson, and Kaleb Schrock won with a 3:30.25 finish. Lamneck also won the boys’ 300 hurdles event with a 40.86 time.

- Harrison Central’s Hunter Boals (first place, shot put, 46-11.00) and Grayden Sprout (fourth place, discus, 140-02)
- River View’s Sam Adams (third place, 800, 2:01.14; 1600, 4:36.98), Javin Robinson (fourth place, 800, 2:03.82), and Hunter Miller’s fourth place, 3200, 10:54.36
- Sandy Valley’s Mason Tucci (first place, long jump, 22-03.50)
