An athlete from a visiting baseball team was shot multiple times Friday evening at Muskingum University.

The first 911 happened just after 7 p.m., reporting shots fire at Mose Moorehead Baseball Field at Muskingum University. When authorities arrived, they learned a player from the visiting Olivet College baseball team was shot multiple times following the game.

The shooting victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

A message was then sent to students and staff, informing them that the campus was under a shelter in place until further notice.

Witness descriptions helped officers from Muskingum University, New Concord Police Department and the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office search for the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody at 7:45 p.m. The shelter in place order was lifted at 9:15 p.m.

“We are so grateful for the rapid response of all our campus, local and regional law enforcement and emergency personnel and for their exceptional competence and care,” Muskingum University President Sue Hasseler said in a letter.

The campus is currently offering counseling and support to those Muskingum individuals immediately impacted by the event.

According to Hasseler, the suspected shooting is not a Muskingum student or employee and there is no threat to the campus community.

All athletics events have been postponed for the weekend.

The investigation is ongoing.
