A 7-year-old Tuscarawas County boy from Wayne Township was transported to the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital campus in Dover on Friday after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries from a projectile, according to a report from the Tuacarawas County Sheriff’s Office.

According to officials, the incident occurred when an adult was using a firearm to shoot at a steel target, resulting in a metal object ricocheting and hitting the child in the chest.

The young patient was later transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital for further treatment, where medical staff indicated that the boy was expected to be treated and released following evaluation.

Authorities investigating the incident have determined that the shooting was accidental.
