The Ohio State Highway Patrol has identified the driver of a red hit-skip semi-tractor trailer involved in a fatal crash that led to the death of a Bolivar man.
With assistance from the public, area businesses, and multiple law enforcement agencies, the semi-truck and its driver were located. The driver has been identified as a 59-year-old man from the Cleveland area.
The incident occurred Oct. 24, when Dennis Alsept, 78, of Bolivar, was driving a 2024 Kia SUV northbound on Interstate 77 near Strasburg. Alsept collided with the rear of the semi-trailer as it maneuvered across the northbound lanes. The truck’s driver, who had initially stopped at the scene for about four minutes, left without reporting the crash.
Alsept succumbed to his injuries on Oct. 31.
The case has now been turned over to the Tuscarawas County Prosecutor’s Office for review, with potential criminal charges forthcoming.
“The Ohio State Highway Patrol would like to thank the public and everyone who provided tips and assistance during this investigation,” a spokesperson said.
Authorities utilized surveillance footage from nearly 30 businesses in the Strasburg, Wooster, and Apple Creek areas to track the semi-truck’s path. Investigators had worked tirelessly to pinpoint where the truck may have loaded its cargo, ultimately leading to the successful identification of the vehicle and driver.
Further updates will be provided as the prosecutor’s office reviews the case.
